Wir sind in Deutschland

Since mostly our English speaking friends will read this, I will write in English. However, I must say we have been using our German a lot! Lynda and I arrived on Sunday and Claire met us at the airport. We rented a car (possibly unnecessary at that point, but ...) and drove to Claire's apartment. It seems everyone in Hanau knows Claire and, in fact, she is all their best friend (sorry about the grammar). We weren't going to be able to go to Herr Schultz-Wahle's party, so we greeted his puppet the students had made. That's Hanna with Lynda and Claire and Herr Schultz-Wahle.We then picked Isabelle and John up at the airport on Tuesday. They stayed with Claire in Hot Hanau while Lynda and I went to Muncih to give a talk and then to Nurnberg to visit Siemens. This picture is in die AlteStadt Nurnberg with the Heilige Geist in the background.
Here are Isabelle and John as they looked getting off the plane in Frankfurt. Pretty fresh looking, huh. Even though they flew coach on USAir.
When we got them back to Claire's apartment, Claire had "Wilkommen" spelled out in Gummi Worms and also had birthday/Christmas presents wrapped for us to open. This resulted in the usual descent into uncontrollable laughter on the part of the 3 kids (David, you would have been afraid).
Then, moving ahead, on Friday the kids took the train to Munich and we drove down from Nurnberg and that's where we all are now. Today, Saturday, we will go to the Olympic Stadium (from the 1972 Olympics) and watch the Germany-Argentina game with about 100,000 friends on a jumbo screen. For those not paying attention to the World Cup, meaning most Americans, it is being played in South Africa, but everyone in Germany (and Argentina) will be camped around a TV somewhere. After that we will drive to Oberammergall, spend the night, see the Passion Play tomorrow (there is a dinner break in the middle of it all!), then drive on to Mannheim to see more of our Deutsche Freunden. Isabelle and John fly back to the states on Wednesday. John gets in to Charleston late (maybe 11 pm) and will be contacting Caroline or someone to pick him up. David should be on his way to New Orleans now - Good Luck, David! And Lynda and I will head "off the grid" on Wednesday and you all can try to guess where we are. We will be back in Charleston Saturday night, however. Tschus!
