Never too old for Badminton

Instead of going out to lunch after church today, Lynda decided to have all over for evening dinner at our house. Grandma, Papa, Aunt Beka, Isabelle, and Caroline all made it. Since the badminton net was up and the court was in good condition, dinner was delayed while some spectacular demonstrations proceeded.

First was the former Baltimore badminton city champion showing she could still bring it. Papa did well after making the adjustment that a birdie acts differently than a tennis ball. Finally Beka took the court and showed a consistent crosscourt serve that baffled the opposition.
Caroline and Isabelle showed previously unknown badminton talents and are considering earning money on the semi-pro badminton circuit to supplement their non-income as artists.

Dinner was a big hit afterwards with much storytelling. All in all, a nice day.

clap your hands in the stands....

make some noise for your boys....

That's right, Charleston Battery season has officially started again! Caroline and I were the proud first Selbys members to attend a game this season. They were so glad that we came they even set off fireworks and gave me 4 yellow Battery cups! (Caroline got one, she is not as good at begging)

They played the Seattle Sounders (very hot team) and Caroline decided that she is going to marry a soccer player! Anyway, the ending of the game was probably the most exciting part. The Battery was up 1-0 when all the sudden players got in a fight and we got a yellow card and the Sounders got to have a free kick ( I Think? ) they shot it to the right guy, and in the ball went! :( We were quite sad. Then one of the Sounders got a yellow card and we got to do the same kick but did not take advantage of it. Oh well, 1-1 is not so bad I guess.

Caroline wants season tickets now, we had a good time!

Frank Gehry

So, we had to watch a documentary today on Frank Gehry the architect and it was pretty interesting... HOWEVER, what I found more interesting was that Claire's little spiral papers kept popping up! I think that Claire is secretly the next Frank Gehry. He even designs his buildings using paper pieces and has a ton of work in Germany (the 1st image is the DB Bank in Berlin).

So Claire, if goldsmithing doesn't work out for you, at least you can fall back on sculptural architecture!

Another teaser! Burrito night instead!

Hi Fams (and friends?)!

The Adventures of Claire and Cindy will really be coming soon. They aren't quite as exciting as the adventures of Peanut Man (4 issues now up!), but still... try to hold on to your seats.

Instead, I am giving you a recipe for a wondeful weekend.

Preparations:
1) Complete all reports, multiple tests, weird homework assignments (sculpture with difficult-drying clay, etc), and try to get a little sleep and exercise in somewhere.

2) Make some good, nay... great friends over the past year.

3) Let Friday turn into Saturday (when should make sure to go shopping before), Sunday.

4) As appetizer, spend Saturday morning on the roof with friends eating brotchen-breakfast complete with coffee, tea, and banana pudding. (Black and white pictures may appear later from this).

5) As first course, Blechkartoffel (pan-roasted potatoes?) mit Guerke Quark (...tasted a lot like Tzatiki Sauce) as Dinner night before.

6) As main course, BURRITO NIGHT!
Ingredients (can be altered):

1 1/2 large tomatoes
1 med onion
3 cloves garlic
med can corn
1/2 large red pepper
1/4 shaker chili spice
few drops of chili sauce
olive oil

rice
can kidney beans
salt

slices of mozzarella-like cheese

First, pre-cook the rice. I added the beans in after it was cooked (forgot!), and just stirred them in and let it sit on the still hot burner and it turned out ok.

In a saucepan on high heat, add a decent amount of olive oil (so that it covers half the pan when you swish it around) and the chopped up onion and garlic. Let simmer for a bit till they look smaller and hopefully not too burnt. Then quickly chop up the tomato into quarters and then smaller slices of the quarters unless you thought ahead enough to do it already, in which case throw em on in. You might want to reduce the heat for good simmering... but it's really your call. Slice the pepper up in small slices as well and schmeiss rein! (throw in).

You may want to add more olive oil over the veggies and stir them around. Accidentally open the wrong side of the chili spice shaker so that a whole bunch falls out, but don't worry... it will make it taste better. Salt occasionally. If the tomatoes and pepper are looking all nice and simmery, just turn the heat off and put the pan cover on it so you can finally join your invited friends and eat the great salad that Hannah made (with avocados and handmade dressing! Will work on getting THAT recipe).

Check on rice and beans... taste... probably add more salt... everyone finished with salad and Euro 1.49 bottle of red wine open. Turn one burner on to low and lightly set tortilla on for a few seconds till "you can just tell" that it's warm. Then set on plate, add spoonful of rice and beans, followed by spoonful of veggies, and stick a few slices of cheese over it. Hopefully the cheese will nicely melt in, and you can fold the burrito up for your guests, since they don't know how.

Serve! You are a great hostess and everyone is almost surprised at just how great and wonderful these vegetarian burritos actually are! Guten Appetit!

... Publicity Photo for Claire and Cindy's Adventure... the soundtrack album itself is called "Alcatraz" in honor of our hostel, the Alcatraz Hostel, where this photo was taken. Excitement!

On the banks for the great, grey-green greasy Limpopo River all set about with fever trees..."

The Elephant's Child!!! How did we use to listen to this??? Was it on a tape for the car? My friend Becky is now working on the Limpopo and the subject title of this post immediately read through my mind. Here it is, btw:

Cooper River Bridge Run/Walk

The GroupRiding in car to race, packed in like sardines

Simulated running, I think.
A great time was had by all, as always. Weather was a little humid with wind against us, but in general it all felt good. The Matthews (Gwenda, Marc, Will, and Mary Rollins) walked, I believe for their first time. Wendy Johnson and her boyfriend Alan also came down from Lexington, Ky, and walked. The pairings were Isabelle and Mary Rollins, Lynda and Gwenda, Wendy and Alan, and Marc and Will. Bayne alone ran with the goal of breaking 50 minutes for the first time ever. This was done (47:28 chip time) and in fact was good enough for the (apparently) highly coveted "top 5% in your age group" award. This, by the way, is a coffee cup that says on it - "top 5% in age group". And a very good coffee cup it is, indeed. The highlight of post race activities was try to catch chick-fil-a cows being thrown into the crowd. Will garnered about 5, I believe. They are sort of like a small webkinz. Everyone who missed it should start planning for next years run. Oh, we all thought best costume we saw running out there this year was actually not a costume, but simply a tee-shirt that had on the back - "If you are reading this, you're not Kenyan". If you can't figure that one out, you need to come to the race next year.

can i have a prius too!!

This is a good movie in my opinion! I saw it tonight with my cousins Will and Mary Rollins !!! (Claire is like.. soo.. jealous) They are so sweet and cute. We went to Chili's first and the three of us together cost $16. Amazing. I need to go out to eat with little kids more often. So, go see it if you can!
