Easter Sunday - joy and food

On our 2nd Easter together (as a married couple) David and I had what one could describe as an "excellent easter". We didn't dye any Easter eggs or get to see any of our family but despite the obvious drawbacks we really did have a wonderful day.
Grass in Manhattan!

We started the day (bright and early for David) at the Fort Washington Collegiate Church in Washington Heights (the top of Manhattan). David was playing guitar for the service and I wanted to spend Easter service with him so I took the A train up to the 10:45 service. We heard a lot of different styles of music - hymns, gospel, contemporary and heard a wonderful sermon about Improv. There was actually a dancer who came out for part of improv (which was a bit much for D and I) but it still added to the overall energy of celebrating the Resurrection. We were a happy crowd. Aunt Beka would love this place as we clapped after every song. I could talk about this service for a while, people. It was amazing. Such a joyful service and such a diverse congregation. I've really never seen anything like it! Which is kind of sad.. in a way. But enough of that - David and I talked about the service for a while afterward and Mom can probably add that I talked her ear off. Actually, David didn't see me during the service (even though I thought he smiled at me - ack!) and thought I had skipped it. Not to worry, we found each other after the service had ended in the midst of the grand Easter Egg Hunt. Next on our agenda was to find an Easter bunny. For David this meant going to Mast Brothers Chocolate Factory and buying a fancy artisan chocolate bar. Later in the day we went more mainstream and bought some Reese's peanut butter Easter eggs and enjoyed them in the park. Yum yum yum.And our Easter dinner?! Well, we decided to end our wonderful day with a wonderful dinner prepared by... not us. Oh wait.. we're still not done. After that huge meal we went to the Chocolate Room in Park Slope and used up the rest of our gift card. Oh yea, we ate a lot.

Certainly don't mean this to be a spiritual buzzkill, but did the improv preacher mention anything about putting death to flight?

I might not completely understand this comment.. but no, I don't think so?

She started off by saying that while Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each have a slightly different version of the Resurrection we do not immediately discredit them because of these discrepancies. Like Mere told me - each painter can paint the same thing but they will turn out differently. Some people embellish stories more than others, etc. This is my quick version of the sermon - I'll write more later.. ! Back to work :)

David puts it more eloquently:

"Her message was likening it to improvisation in music and the arts 'improvising on a theme' while some details may change between them they each carry the common theme, the Good News."

Got it! I would have been surprised if the reformed church of America just preached on improv on the most important day of the Christian year. I wanted to be sure that you heard the Good News on this greatest day: death no longer has dominion over us (The Old Adam) and the Passover is made new for everyone in the resurrection. The "death put to flight" thing was just poetic, don't you know.

Wow... that sounds like a truly great Easter! I will post about my and Becky's Easter too as soon as we get the photos up... I can already tell you though that your eatings were far yummier than ours, I can imagine.

Cool church service! Do you think you'll go there from time to time?
