Well, here we are. 60 years ago my dear sweet dad was born to an amazing set of parents (or the police?). He gained a brother and a sister along the way, picked up a wife and had 3 most excellent children. The middle one was particularly amazing, but let's stick to the story here. Now at 60 years he is cooler than he's ever been: flying planes, making beer, living at the beach, winning rock band competitions. More than that though, he's not your typical "cool" dad. He's smart, thoughtful, and sometimes will listen to your stories ("Very Good"). With all of his quirks and affinity for setting porches on fire he has consistently amazed us Selbies. So to that I'd like to say a quick thank you.

Thank Your For
taking us hiking when we were kids and showing us how beautiful this earth can be
teaching us that we should listen to all points of view
giving me two of my best friends, Claire and John
helping us with math homework
long talks on even longer car rides
teaching us to "take a photo in our minds" (I still have my Alps image)
giving the best (and only) toast on our wedding day
speaking of ... C + J where were your speeches? I am still owed! I want singing, dancing and German!
singing lots of songs to us
teaching us how to fall by jumping off the garage in Everett
showing us that you can be the smartest guy in the room, but still not know how to microwave a hotdog
marrying my Mama
teaching us every sport ever
learning and mastering new things even when we think you already know everything
fly-fishing trips in the great Pacific Northwest
pennies, nickles and dimes for allowance as a kid
carrying the surfboard because it's too heavy
enthusiastically encouraging us in whatever we decide to pursue
ski trips
moving us closer to Grandma and Papa even though I cried the whole way
the love of coffee

...singing 'Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat' with mom to us on the car trips back from ski trips (and us thinking everybodys' parents do that kind of thing)
... Touring us through Hong Kong like it was the back of your hand (and waiting just 10 or so years later to tell us you had no clue)
... making us jump from extreme heights into cold waters of uncertain depths
... letting all us kids wear your patched jeans at sometime or another, when the scarecrow didn't have them
... that we girls are prettier without makeup
... helping us to think that weird is normal and normal is just boring
(and Isabelle... have a big anniversary party. I still have time to prepare, right?)
